Puffin, Scooter and I wish you and yours a blessed
and peaceful holiday season......
Well,
Puffin
is four years old now, and we've been thinking for close to a year
about bringing a little sister into the family - figured it was now
or never. I wanted to support an
NACR breeder so we
decided to go with
Birdwalk Farm in Crossville, TN, and have been
working with them since the spring of this year to have a puppy selected
that would be flown up from Tennessee to our local airport here. Scooter
is of course from NACR registered parents and is an NACR registered cockapoo.
Scooter
was born June 14, 2002, one of four littermates born to Birdwalk's Daisy and Birdwalk's Rusty. Things
really started clicking around the end of July when and I received pics
of a pup that Lucile and Dan felt would be a perfect match for what I
was hoping for - light in color this time, and a puppy that would stay
small in size but with a personality that defies description. Around
the end of July this is the photo that greeted me in an email with "how's
this one?"
I was smitten and we all
decided it would be a go - so from then on I was kept fully updated
with photos and stories of the antics of this little bundle of fur.
Once it came out that she camped in her food bowl and had her litter
mate pushing her around the crate in it - it did not take long for "Scooter"
to come into conversation; it fit and from there on it stuck. Scooter it
was.

Over the next weeks I was kept fully
up to date on Scooter's antics, and pics of her every few days...
And then the day
finally came... she arrived on American Airlines to Stewart International
Airport here in Newburgh on August 29, 2002 at 5:14pm (
though there is a little more to THAT
story.. and here's what it's like to have a puppy shipped..) - fit
as a fiddle and absolutely no worse for wear in having been around more
of the country by air than I have. The folks from American at Stewart
were great, and let us use the baggage office as a quiet place to get
her carrier open and let her catch her breath - though I think I was
catching mine more than she was catching hers. It took about four minutes
for her to decide that this was going to be ok, start licking my nose
and snuggle into my arms. That also gave us time for the "crowd" at
the baggage area in Stewart to thin out - there were to incoming and one
outgoing flights all congregated (for Stewart that's a lot of people
at one time) - and then it was time to strike out for home (about a forty
minute drive). We encountered a few remaining souls in the terminal, all
of whom just melted at the sight of this bundle of fur in my arms (including
one lady who actually KNEW she was a cockapoo!) - the guy at the parking
gate when we paid the fee was making googoo eyes at her, and the lady at
the toll booth at the bridge I think was about ready to climb into the car
to snuggle her. Scooter had settled in for the ride home, during which time
she apparently decided that this was going to be ok, since from then on
she has stuck like glue and prefers not to be out of my sight.
From the time she
arrived home and put her first four feet on the ground here Scooter
has not been phased in the least - it was like she had been here all
of her puppy life. She started waddling around right away, curious and
alert, not missing a trick. She drank and ate, snuggled and played....
I would not have believed that a creature could have spent the day in
an air carrier flying on her own - she has been totally self assured
and confident from the getgo. From Scooter's point of view it was love
at first sight with Puffin - though admittedly Puffin has other ideas
still. We are making progress though with Puffin lettting Scooter know
who is TopDog, and I make it clear to Scooter that Puffin is right...
though that does not deter Scooter from thinking that Puffin is one big
jolly playmate, and the ambushes are constant.
